John Mathieson: A gentleman and a gentle man

John passed away on 7 June 2026 after a short illness.  He has left a lasting legacy in Liddington and across the Wellspring Parish.  During the many years he lived in Liddington with his wife Mandy and family he devoted much of his time to supporting the local community including the church – and living next door to All Saints church meant he was never far away!

John was always happy to get involved in church and village activities and often led or initiated them.  He played an important role in keeping the Church’s Joint Parochial Church Council very much on track, over a considerable number of years. John acted as the Secretary to the JPCC, including the 3 yrs of interregnum when the parish was in vacancy.  John also acted as the Parish Safeguarding officer, alongside Mandy, which involved a considerable amount of work; contact with individuals regarding training and keeping the parish compliant with the safeguarding policies now required of all parishes.

John was also the Treasurer for the Liddington Village Hall and an active member of the Village Hall Committee and was often seen helping at events in the Village Hall.

Together, John and Mandy were heavily involved in the fundraising for the renewal of the Bells at All Saints in 2016.  Since then, they have continued to be the driving force in the village for fundraising, be it coffee mornings, Christmas Bazaars, nearly new sales, Platinum Jubilee Celebrations as well as the event that they are most famous for – the village fete.  Back in 2023 there had been a few years without a fete as a result of Covid.  John and Mandy decided that needed to change and galvanised the support of villagers and got the fete up and running again.  They have continued to lead it each year since making it bigger and better each time.

Those of us attending John’s funeral on 15th June learned that his service to Liddington was only a small part of his broader contribution to society.  To hear his work colleague talk so fondly of the impact that John had had on so many people around the world was a fantastic tribute to a man that gave so much to so many people.

Thank you John for everything you have done for Liddington, Wellspring Villages and beyond.  You have touched many lives.  RIP

With gratitude and affection, your PCC colleagues.
